The Sir Stuart Hogg market, better known as New Market is a shopping complex which has almost attained the status of an institution. Designed by an East Indian Railway Co. architect, it was opened in 1874 & named after the then Commissioner, Sir Stuart Hogg. Today, it continues to be a premier shopping area, despite a part of it being burnt down in late 1985. Its red brick gothic clock tower bears testimony to a past grandeur. The gutted portion was rebuilt & is now referred to as the New Complex, which contains a large number of shops for garments. Also available are a variety of dress materials, leather goods, toys, novelty items etc.
