This
road was called the 'Burial Ground Road' in the yester years. It confluences with Acharya Jagadish Basu Road in the east
which was earlier
named as Lower Circular Road. There are several graves in this
place.
The
British were buried in St. John's Church and its adjacent
territories in those days. Due to the increasing population of
the British, they gradually started to use the adjoining areas as
cemetery which led to the name
'Burial Ground Road'. This name was in vogue till the
concluding phase of the 18th century. At the inception of
the 19th century, the road came to be known as 'Park Street' after the garden resort and park
of Sir Eliza Imp. Formerly, there was the North-Park Street Graveyard which no longest exists
to-day. Here we find the stupendous hospital of The Assembly of God Church. Herein
lie Richmond Thackeray, Col. Akilis, Cark Patrick, William James the
founder of Bishop College in their eternal slumber.
The
southern cemetery exists even
to this day. Captain Mack was buried
here. Lord Byron composed the classic poem 'Don Juan'
from the detailed description of the capsized ship by Capt. Mack. Rose
Almauyer had also been buried here after dying a premature death in the year 1800. She
was only 20. The pensive poet wrote
a poetry dedicated to her which is inscribed in the grave. Another
stalwart Henry Louis Vivian Derozio lies
here
in his eternal slumber. His burial is in the south-west corner
of the cemetery. There is another cemetery at the junction of Park street and Jagadish Chandra
Basu Road. Here lies the versatile
poet Michael
Madhusudan Dutt.
