It is a reader's
paradise. Criss-crossed by tram lines, College Street is replete
with
bookstalls that display a bewildering variety of books crammed
in every conceivable place. Books ranging from best sellers to
the copies of the Upanishads and even manuscripts can be bought at reasonable
prices.
The Coffee House in College Street is a favourite haunt of the
city's intellectuals.
Here you can witness the carefree 'adda', an essential facet
of Bengali life. It is a unique feature of Calcutta and is a sort of get-together.
Over a steaming cup of coffee, every topic - from the price
of fish to the latest cricket scores is discussed with unabated
enthusiasm. The proprietor is very sporting and turns a blind eye to the fact
that only one cup of coffee has been ordered in a table where
4/5 men are sitting and talking for hours.
