Annapurnar
Ghat was formerly known as Raghu Mitra's Ghat. Raghu's father was
Gobindo Ram Mitra. During the British regime, Gobindo Ram was
designated as the 'black deputee'. Bishnu Ram Chakraborty of Bag
Bazar became the 'Ameen' of Calcutta when Hastings was the Governor
General. Before setting off for England, Hastings gifted him with
a mammoth 52 acres of land. In 1776, Bishnuram Chakraborty constructed
four 'Shiva Temples' in Raghu Mitra's Ghat. After that, he worshipped
Goddess Annapurna. Henceforth, the ghat came to be known as
Annapurnar Ghat. The temple of the Mother Goddess still exists
at 193, Bag Bazar Street.
