Kaleidoscope > People > The South-Indians

The states which generally represent southern India are Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala & Karnataka. Geographically all these states have a close proximity and are akin to each other in many respects. They resemble each other to a great extent in topographical features, environment, tradition, culture and languages.

The number of South-Indians in Calcutta is worth mentioning and the figure is steadily on the rise. The South-Indians are known for their tenacity and industrious nature. They are believed to have been endowed with superior brains and mental attributes which, compounded with their tenacious nature, helps them to attain new heights in the professional sphere. Many South-Indians come to Calcutta in search of jobs. Today, the number of South-Indians in the Government and private enterprises in Calcutta has reached a reasonably high proportion. Besides, these enterprising and Spartan people have also explored the world of business and are thriving commendably in the competitive Calcutta market. A bulk of them came to Calcutta with a gamut of cottage industries as also a colourful and wide range of garments, which are the hallmarks of South India.

Last, but not the least, comes the South-Indian cuisine which is immensely popular all over India. In Calcutta, for instance, several South-Indian men are earning their bread and butter by running hotels and restaurants which serve exclusive South-Indian dishes viz., Dosa, Idli, Uttapam, Dahi-Bada etc. The Calcuttans who are regarded as real connoisseurs of food simply love the South-Indian cuisine.
