The people from Bihar, better known as Biharis, constitute
the bulk of the immigrants of Calcutta from the neighbouring
states. They are found everywhere in Calcutta. They come
to Calcutta primarily in search of jobs. They are mostly
found in works, which involve physical strength, stamina
and hardwork.
Majority of them, for instance, work in factories, mines
and industries where sedulous work is required. Many of
them work as porters in the Howrah and Sealdah stations.
Again a large chunk of the Biharis drive cabs and pull rickshaws,
or work in shops, either as shopkeepers or their helpers.
They are also reliable as security-guards and gatekeepers. They
possess robust statures and are bold enough for doing all
hardy jobs which involve risks. They are also known for
their tenacity. Again, several Bihari students come to Calcutta
for better educational facilities. They pursue courses in
colleges, universities, medical colleges or hotel
management institutes.
Later, they get employed in the city and also get domiciled.
They do not dwell in any colony or exclusive belt but are
sporadically found everywhere in the city. The very low
income groups who live a hands-to-mouth existence, are also found
in South Calcutta and the suburbs, though to a lesser extent.
Some schools and colleges have been built in Calcutta exclusively
for the Biharis. These hard-working people are fun-loving and
get contented
easily.
