The ever-increasing population of Calcutta is a paradox
which seems to have no solution. People of diverse religions, languages, culture and communities have been dwelling here
since the days of yore. The Bengalis comprise 63.6% of the
city's population whereas the Hindusthanis (Hindi-speaking people) constitute 21.24% of the population. Au reste, there are also Nepalese, Oriyas, Gujaratis, Biharis, Punjabees, etc. who are inseparable parts of the metropolis. It is these people who have instilled life and charm into the city of joy and made it so vibrant, dynamic and cosmopolitan in nature.
Now the moot question is, why people from all over the world and especially from remote parts of India come to Calcutta and get domiciled here? The reason is simple and obvious. The sweet Bengali language, fascinating ambience and appealing features of the city and above all, the renowned hospitality and warmth of the Calcuttans have captivated their hearts. They are like those lotus eater
soldiers of Ulysses who drank the philtre of the dream city and could not go back. The city is not impeccable from all perspectives. It has its drawbacks
and demerits according to the laws of nature. But the city, with all its merito and demerito factors, rises above all petty reasoning and criteria and
douses its denizens with love and warmth.
Calcutta is also a spectacular city of opposites. On one side of the broad city street,
one will find skyscrapers whereas on the other side, people dwell on the pavements and shanties. The haves and have-nots, opulent and indigent, together form an integral part of this colourful city. The minute details of Calcutta---its inhabitants---their occupations, outlooks and lifestyles are vividly narrated below.
