The Calcutta Municipal Corporation entered into a joint venture with Gujrat Ambuja Cements in 1994 and formed 'Ganapati Parks.' Its central aim is to build groovy Theme Parks, Resorts etc. as the demand for the leisure industry is soaring high nowadays.
'Swabhumi' the heritage park which is creating sensation among the Calcuttans today, is a project of the aforesaid Ganapati Parks. Swabhumi (swa+bhumi) in English means 'my land.' The very name is homely and snug and lets a visitor feel a sense of oneness and intimacy with the park as he enters it. It can be called the kingdom of happiness where there is fun galore for children and adults alike. A deep sense of heritage permeates every nook and career of Swabhumi and the main offering of the Park is highly educative. With a reasonable focus on Bengal, Swabhumi exhibits and demonstrates art, crafts, heritage and culture from different regions in India.
The modern man is not quite aware of his roots. He is ignorant of the rich cultural heritage of India down the ages. But at Swabhumi, the visitor will get an opportunity to realize his/her roots and pay a visit to those days of glorious antiquity. In a nutshell, it can be said that the cultural diversity of India is brought together at this heritage park.
Swabhumi is located on the Eastern Metropoliton Bypass opposite the Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Saltlake Stadium). It is just half an hour away from the core of the metropolis. The lush greenery all round, the sylvan surroundings and the undulating landscape is a pleasant sight to behold. Incidentally, Swabhumi is the only heritage park in Calcutta with a natural hillock. Adjacent to the park is situated the Subhas Sarovar Lake. Within a radius of 2-3Kms from the park, several commercial structures of immense importance are likely to come up within a few years viz., Calcutta Stock Exchange, extension of Nicco Park, two five-star hotels etc.
