1920: Hemanta Mukhopaddhay was born on 16th June, 1920 in Benaras at his maternal uncle's house. His grandfather Gobindo Chandra Bandopaddhay was a renouned civit semant. His parents were Kalidas Mukhopaddhay and KiranBala Devi.

1928: After the death of his grandfather paternal, Hemanta's family abundoned their old house in Bahadu, a village in South 24 Prgns. and came to their new house at Roop Chand Nandan Lane in Bhawanipur. Here, he get admitted in Nasiruddin Shah Memorial High School.

1934: Hemanta took admission in Mitrata Institution in Bhawanipur in the seventeenth standard.

1935: He got the first break in AIR to sing. His friend and poet Subhash Mukhopaddhay accompanied him to the radio station. The lyrics of that song was composed by Subhash Mukhopaddhay. The song was "Amar Gaanete Ele Nabaroope Chirantani..."

1936: He founded the Kalyan Sangha Sahitya Sabha along with Subhash Mukhopaddhay, Santosh Kumar Ghosal, Jagat Dasi, Ramkrishna Maitra, Sudhi Ranjoa Mukhopaddhay and Sudha Sengupta.

1937: He passed the Matric in first division and took admission in Jadavpur Engineering College.

1937: His maiden record was released by Columbia Records. The lyrics were given by Nareshwari Bhattacharya. Shailendra Duttagupta was the music director.

1937: He wrote a story (Ekti Din) which was published in 'Desh,' an esteemed Bengali magazine.

1938: He started to learn shorthand and type writing. He gave up as a student of Engineering. Simultaneously, he started eraning money by taking a few singing tutions.

1940: He got his first break as a play-back singer in 'Nimai Sanyasi' which turned out to be a very popular feature film in those days. The legendary Chhabi Biswas played the lead role in this film. Hemanta Kumar rendered his golden voice for all the Nimai songs. During this time, two of his wonderful records on Rabindra Sangeet were released. Now, he also joined the People's Theatre. He was highly inspired by Rabindranath at this stage when he went to Shanti Niketan.

1945: Hemanta Kumar married Bela Devi. He showed his prowess as a music director in 'Purbaraag' and 'Abhijatri' which were two outstanding films.

1947: Son Jayanta was born.

1948: Hemanta made his debut as a Hindi play-back singer in the film 'Zameen Asmaan.'

1949: The unique record 'Ganyer Badhu' created sensation all over. Salil Chowdhury's magical music and Hemanta's golden voice gave a new dimension to Bengali songs. Later this year, notable producer V.Shantaram invited him to Mumbai to work as the music director in his proposed film 'Shiv Shakti.' However, the film could not be made due to certain technical inconveniences.

1951: Hemendra Gupta took him to the Filmisthan Studio for 'Anandamath' which was being made there in Hindi.

1952: He sang the extremely melodious 'Yeh Raat Yeh Chandni Din Kahan' in the film 'Jaal' which became an instantancous hit. S.D. Burman happened to be the music director of the film.

1953: He insisted Lata Mangeshkar to sing Rabindra Sangeet for the first time. It was unique record in which Hemanta and Lata performed a couple of duets as well.

1955: He received great fame and recognition as the music director of the film 'Nagina.' He received his first Filmfare Award as a music director for 'Nagina.'

1958: Daughter Ranu was born. This year, he produced 'Neel Akasher Neeche.' He also insisted Kishore Kumar to perform as a play-back singer in the Bengali film 'Lukochuri.'

1959: Hemanta went abroad.

1960: He produced the Hindi feature film 'Bees Saal Baad.'

1962: He sang a few patriotic songs which was simply brilliant and boosted up the Indian spirits.

1964: He received a warm felicitation in the West Indies and Surinam.

1968: His autobiography 'Anandadhara' was published.

1970: He became the music director of 'Siddhartha' which was directed by Conrad Roux. He also started directing the feature film 'Anindita.'

1971: He was offered the honorary citizenship of Baltimore City.

1983: Hemanta was conferred the prestigious title of 'Rabindra Sangeet charya' by Sailajaranjan Mazumdar on behalf of 'Baitanik.'

1985: He was conferred the D.lit. by the Rabindra University. This year also marked the golden jubilee of his singing career.

1987: He received the 'National Award' for the film 'Lalan Phakir.'

1988: He was cnferred the D.Lit. by the Calcutta University on 1st April.

1989: He went to Bangladesh as an hon'ble guest on 6th September. There he was conferred the 'Michael Madhusudan Award' on 8th September.

Hemanta fell sick on 26th September this year and was admitted in the Bellvue Nursing Home in Calcutta. He breathed his last at 11-15 p.m. He was cremated on 27th September at the Keoratala Burning Ghat.
