ESSAYS & TREATISES

ABANINDRANATH THAKUR (1871 - 1951)
Abanindranath Thakur was a quintessential artiste. But his first and foremost identity is that he is a gem of a creative writer. In his compositions, he has ventured and explored in the ancient and mediaeval ages and portrayed those times and happenings with unique precision and style. His stories are a perfect amalgamation of facts, events and colourful imagery. His prose has a smooth poetic charm and at times, uses symbolic gestures. Some of his notable books are 'Kshirer Putul', ''Bhoot Petneer Desh', 'Khajanchir Khata', 'Shakuntala', 'Banglar B rata', 'Rajkahini' etc. Some of them are historical narratives while some are works of fictions and fairy tales which will be adored by children of all times.

Abanindranath was also unparalleled as a serious thinker and contemplative writer. Notable among this form of writing (essays) were 'Bageswari Shilpa Prabandhabali' (1949), 'Jora Sankor Dhare' (1950), 'Gharoa' (1948) etc.

However, Abanindranath was not as attentive and meticulous about authoring stories and essays as he was in his artistic pursuits. So his admirers have to remain contented with the limited number of essays and stories that he had written.

RAMENDRA SUNDER TRIVEDI (1864 - 1919)
Acharya Ramendra Sunder Trivedi was a wonder of the 20th century. He was remarkable for his integrity and resolute character, august personality, erudition, high philosophy and patriotic zeal. He wrote several essays on contemporary topics and covered literature, philosophy, history and pure science.

His famous essays which have glorified Bengali literature are as follows :-

'Prakriti' (1903), 'Jigyasa' (1910), 'Karmakatha' (1920), 'Sabdakatha' (1924), 'Bichitra Jagat' (1920), 'Charit Katha' (1913), 'Jagatkatha' (1926) etc.

He introduced an ideal style of writing scientific essays and himself composed treatises on Physics, Astrology, Astronomy etc. in a lucid form. He made a unique fusion of science and humour and wrote essays which could be easily comprehended by the masses.

PRAMATHA CHOWDHURY (1868 - 1946)
Pramatha Chowdhury was the renowned editor of 'Sabuj Patra' who wrote under the pseudonym of 'Birbal'. He came in close affinity with Rabindranath but did not join the Rabindra bandwagon readily. On the contrary, he impressed Rabindranath by writing in a lucid style, using the common man's language - the style that is used in common parlance.

However, his fame and calibre as an author have been nicely revealed in his collection of essays.

'Yel-Noon-Ladki' (1906), 'Birbaler Hal Khata' (1917), 'Nana Katha' (1929), 'Nana Charcha' (1932) etc.
