Dr. Mala Mazumdar is a much talked-about dancer in Bengal who has expertised in Manipuri, Kathakali and Katthak dances. She has shown remarkable signs of originality and finesse as a dancer in all the three branches of dance.

Mala was born in Calcutta on 23rd October, 1950 in a refined and well-to-family. Her family was inclined to cultural activities and there was always an air of suavity in their house. Her father Dhirendra Prasad Biswas gave her the best of education besides inspiring her to be a noted dancer some day.

In 1959, she got a diploma with distinction from the 'Bani Sangeetalaya.' During this time she was fortunate to get necessary guidance from some exceptional teachers, especially Guru Balkrishna Menon who was highly impressed with her and wanted this eligible student to reach sky-kissing heights in the sphere of dance. In 1965, Mala came out as a first class honurs graduate 
distinction from the Rabindra Bharati University. In 1967, she became a master of arts in dance from the same university. Her subject was Manipuri dance. During this period, she was under the tutelage of renowned dance gurus like Govindan Kutty and Nadia Singh. She even got the honour of winning a gold medal from the Rabindra Bharati University.

Mala made extensive researches and study on dance and music. From 1980 to 1993, she thoroughly learnt the art of dance from noted teachers like Thankumari Kutty, Nadia Singh, Bipin Singh, Kalanidhi Narayan and stalwarts of their ilk. She has got a soft and melodious voice and even took extensive lessons in Rabindra Sangeet singers like Sumitra Sen.

From the very inception of her dance career, Mala has given outstanding performances in different dance festivals and cultural programmes all over India. The critics have always appreciated her as a dancer of a different genre. Her forte have always been Manipuri and Kathakali. Her analytical essays on dance come out regylarly in different newspapers and magazines. She is also linked with the Rabindra Bharati University as a Manipuri dance teacher. She is a proud teacher who has hundreds of aspiring students some if whom have also made it big in the sphere of Manipuri dance. Her sole inspiration in life is her husband Dr. Nitish Mazumder.
