In the sphere of folk dance, Batu Pal is a respected name as a dancer, teacher and choreographer. He was born on 10th September, 1935 in an affluent and culturally sound family. His noble background had definitely helped him a lot to pursue dance as a career. He was born to Manilal Pal and Leelabati pal who were both fond of art and culture.

Since his childhood, Batu Pal had an earnest proclivity to learn the art of dance and dreamt of making it big as a dancer some day. He was fortunate to get such caring parents who pampered him and Valued all his lofty dreams. Seeing his earnest desire to be a dancer, his parents, unlike the general middle-class parents, encouraged him by all possible ways to become a dancer.

From the very inception, Batu showed signs of a prodigious dancer with a difference. He was particular inclined to folk dance and made it his forte. Accordingly, he experimented with several folk dance forms in different parts of India and gave birth to a novel and ecstatic form of dance with his innovative touches. Gradually his talent spread its wings and he became a popular folk-dancer in India and abroad.

Batu joined the Udaysankar Cultural Centre when he was basking in the glory of fame. He came into the limelight not only as an ace dancer but also as a director and choreographer of immence potential. He has been highly appreciated by the press and the critics. In the Doordarshan, for instance, some spectacular works directed by Batu created quite a sensation. Some of the notable works are 'Neeldarpan,' 'Musafir,' 'Mahesh' etc.

Batu Pal has also established himself as a dance director and choreographer. He directed 'Arun-Barun-Kiranmala,' an exclusive dance drama for children, which won the President's award. Batu Pal also received a prestigious medal from the president for his brilliant work. As the choreographer and director of late Bulbul Chowdhury's ballet troupe, Batu had trauclled to England, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Italy and several other countries.

Today, Batu is a legendary figure in the sphere of folk dance. He is the professor of folk dance in the Rabindra Bharati University. He is also the dance director of the cultural wing of the Labour Board of the state government. It will not be an exaggeration to say that he is an institution in himself in the arena of folk dance. He is also the examiner of Bangiya Sangeet Parishad, Rabindra Bharati University, Biswa Bharati etc. He founded 'Manjeer,' a peerless dance institution and workshop, where he teaches hundreds of aspiring young folk dancers and guides them to blossom with utmost care and affection.
