In the sphere of all culture, especially dance, the name of Anandasankar deserves special mention. He was the son of Udaysankar, the legendary Indian dancer of Bengali origin. His mother Amalasankar was also a renowned dancer in those days. In fact the pas de deux of Udaysankar and Amalasankar will always be considered as the epitome of aesthetic Indian dance performance, a class which very few dancers have managed to achieve till date.
So Anandasankar had dance in his blood. He had an innate sense of rhythm and music. His fingers played magic on the sitar. He was a quintessential music director and a choreographer of immense potential. Since the dawn of his senses, Anada's life revolved round music in all its splendiferous manifestations. Besides being the son of the illustrious dancer Udaysankar, he was also the nephew of Ravisankar, the living legand of Indian classical music. So, it will not be an exaggeration to say that he was born and brought up in such a highly artistic ambience of music and dance, that it was impossible for him to think of pursuing any other profession.
After the completion of his formal education in the reputed Gwalior Scindia School, Anandasankar started to take Sitar lessons from Dr. Lalmani Mishra in Benaras. In course of time, he showed tremendous innovative genius and made several unique experiments by blending oriental and occidental music. His originality and gifted potential led him give birth to a new, refined and ethereal brand of music which captivated the hearts of millions of listeners all over the globe.
He created umpteen prices of dulect music for the radio and the television. He played the role of music director in several tele-plays, movies and fashion shows. As a music director, he received the prestigious National Award from the then president for Mrinal Sen's 'Chorus.' He had his own ballet troupe where he played the multifarious roles of script writer, concept developer, music director, composer and designer, producer and choreographer. Some of his exquisite dance dramas which were highly appreciated worldover were 'Nabayug,' 'Atmodoy,' 'Mriganayani,' 'Temptation,' 'Ahimsa,' 'Buddhi Bijoya' etc. which were conceived and composed by him. This quintessential artiste passed away at a premature age which was an irreparable loss for the world of Indian dance and music.
