Works of Transliteration hold an important place in the literature of all languages. It is through this mode of translation, that the people of different countries come closer to each other by reading and knowing each other's literature, art and culture. Bengali Drama has also been encriched by incorporating a lot of transliterated plays. Many of the modern playwrights have shown keen interest in translating foreign plays.
Sri. Umanath Bhattacharja has translated some spectacular plays. He translated Gorky's 'The Lower Depths' and named it 'Neecher Mahal'.

Sri Ajit Gangopaddhay's fame in the world of Drama mainly rests on his transliterations. He has translated the all time great plays like 'An Inspector Calls' (J.B. Pristley), 'Hedda Gabler' (Ibsen), 'The Sea Gull' (Chekov) etc. into 'Thana Theke Aschi', 'Shakuntala Roy' and 'Akash Bihangee' respetively. Sri. Somendra Chandra Nandi was also adept in this art of translation. He translated Sartrey's 'Men without Shadows' into Bengali and entitled it 'Chhaya Biheen' Sri. Shibesh Mukhopadhyaya translated Chekov's 'Three Sisters' as 'Teen Champa'.

Sri. Sadhan Kumar Bhattacharya did a commendable work in translating 'King Oedipus' by Sophodes. Sri. Utpal Dutta wrote 'Madhu Chakra' adopted from 'Mrs. Warren's Profession by G.B. Shaw. Sri. Ashoke Sen wrote 'Abartan', adopted from three foreign plays.

Several theatrical groups have often translated many outstanding foreign plays and staged them. Some such notable groups are 'Little Theatre', Gana Natya Mancha, Bahuroopie, Shauvanik etc.


Bahuroopie, among the abovementioned groups, have translated a few plays of Ibsen and staged them. Their remarkable play 'Putul Khela' was but a scintillating translation of 'A Doll's House'.

Shauvanik has enacted the translated version of 'Ghosts' by Ibsen. Little Theatre has earned immense popularity by staging both 'Othello' and 'Neecher Mahal'. The 'Shauvanik' Theatre Group translated the 'Ghosts' by ibsen and staged it. Several Theatre Groups have enacted the transliterated version of the 'Respectable Prostitute' by Sartrey. The Chaturmukh Group had staged Arthur Miller's 'Death of a Salesman'. Its changed version was 'Janaiker Mrityu'.



Ajitesh Bandopaddhaya had done a unique work in translating and staging Brekht's 'Three Penny Opera' as 'Teen Paisar Pala'. Shekar Chattopaddhaya had translated and produced 'Mr. Puntila and his Hired man, Matri' in Bengali. The production was named 'Pantu Laha'. Another remarkable play, 'Gharir Gandi' was a laudable translation of 'Caucasian Chalk Circle'.
