Post War Bengali Drama




Bijan Bhattacharja contributed immensely to the new dramatic movement in Bengal. Some of his excellent plays are 'Jaban-bandi', 'Nabanna', 'Gotrantar' etc.

Sri. Tulsi Lahiri had dedicated himself for the amelioration of Bengali Drama and stage. Some of his remarkable plays are 'Pathik', 'Chenra Taar', 'Dukhir Imaan', 'Laxmi Priyar Sangsar' etc.

Sri.Digindra Chandra Bandopadhyaya had endeavoured to establish Bengali Drama on a platform sans emotion or sentimental harpings. Some of his notable plays are 'Antaral', 'Taranga', 'Bastuvita', 'Mokabila', 'Mashaal', 'Jeeban Shrote' etc.

Salil Sen was one of the most formidable playwrights of the modern era. Some of his outstanding plays are 'Natun Ihudi', 'Mou Chore', 'Down Train', 'Disari', 'Darpan', 'Sukriti' etc.

The eminent author Narayan Gangopaddhaya had also tried a hand at composing plays. Some of his notable plays are 'Rammohan', 'Harate Chai', 'Baro Bhoot' etc.

Sri. Kiran Moitra was a talented playwright. Some of his important plays are 'Baro Ghanta', 'Chora Bali', 'Natak Noi', 'Ja Hochche Tai', 'Trishna'.

Chabi Bandopaddhaya is regarded as a progressive playwright with a practical approach and rational outlook. Some excellent plays of this playwright are 'Keranir Jeeban', 'Chor', 'Street Beggar' etc.

Dhananjoy Bairagi stands out prominently as a meritorious playwright in modern Bengali Drama. Some of his sensational plays are 'Rupoli Chand' (1958), 'Ek Peyala Coffee' (1960), 'Rajani Gandha' (1960), 'Aar Habe Na Deri' (1961) etc.

Utpal Dutta introduced drastic changes in theatrical acting and production techniques. He is very meticulous in analyzing the diverse shades of the multitude of characters, based on the platform of stark reality and the intricacies of everyday life. He believes in conflicting materialism and uses his plays to focus his views candidly. Some of his outstanding plays are 'Chhaya Nat' (1958), 'Angar' (1959), 'Ghoom Nei' (1962), 'Ferari Fauj' (1968), 'Kallol' (1968), 'Manusher Adhikare', 'Tiner Talwar' etc.

Sri. Beeru Mukhopaddhaya's plays reveal a profound contemplation of the contemporary age and society. They are steeped in the extract of finer sensibilities. Some of his famous plays are 'Sankranti' (1959), 'Sahityik' (1960), 'Dada Janmalen' etc.

Sri. Sunil Dutta holds an important place as a playwright and producer of dramas. Some of his notable plays are 'Aripada Master' (1958), 'Jatugriha' (1956), 'Barna Parichay' (1961), 'Khara Nadeer Shrote', 'Dola' etc.

Sri. Somendra Chandra Nandi has written a few plays and joined the association of playwrights with sincere tenacity and bubbling energy. Some of his important plays are 'Samantaral' (1960), 'Charpoka' (1961) etc.

Sri. Ramen Lahiri has composed some nice plays viz. 'Aparajito' (1958), 'Shatatama Rajanir Abhinay' (1961), 'Parowana' (1962), 'Panthasala' (1962), 'Dheu' (1964), 'Elem Notun Deshe' (1969) etc.

Sri. Sailesh Guha Niyogi has also composed a few commendable plays viz. 'Camp Three', 'Divorce', 'Pahari Phool', 'Sameside', 'Klanta Roopakar' etc.

The remarkable plays of Sri. Jyotu Bandopaddaya are – 
'Bayen' (1965), 'Gateman' (1963), 'Mucheo Ja Moche Na' (1965), etc.

Sri. Badal Sarkar has carved out a niche for himself in the world of drama. Many playwrights and dramatis personae follow his style and technique of compositions. Some of his outstanding plays are 'Baro Pishima' (1961), 'Baki Itihaas' (1967) etc.

Manoj Mitra is another example of a brilliant playwright. He explores a wide variety of subjects and never gets stagnated. Some of his marvelous plays are 'Neelkantha Bish' (1969), 'Abasanna Prajapati' (1971), 'Chakbhanga Madhu' (1971), 'Kothay Jabo' (1972) etc.

An important paradigm of Sri. Ratan Kumar Ghosh's play is 'Amritashya Putra' (1965).

Sri. Mohit Chattopaddhaya has composed some spectacular plays with some bizarre elements. Some of his excellent plays are 'Mrityusangbad' (1969), 'Captain Hurrah' (1972), 'RajRakta' (1972) etc.
