Poetry
has a close affinity with drama. The former
is abstract and flies on the wings of fantasy whereas the
latter is a concrete happening in the purview of the
spectators. However,
a brilliant playwright must possess the insight and exquisite
imagination of a poet.
The
best plays in the world - the Greek and the Shakespearean ones
have been composed in a style and diction which is essentially
poetic. Similarly,
poetry plays an immense role in the world of Bengali Drama.
Even Rabindra Nath has composed a few plays in verse
pattern. Some
outstanding examples are 'Phalgooni', 'Rather Rashi'
etc.
A
few more important plays of this verse pattern are 'Dui-Ar-Dui' by Sri. Dilip Roy,
'Neel Kantha' by Ram
Basu, 'Ek Labya' by Mangalcharan Chattopaddhaya, 'Samudra Dhrupadi' by Sri Giri Shankar,
'Ek Ratrir Janya'
by Sri. Krishna Dhar etc.
