The glorious impact of patriotic plays and their far-reaching effects, have been keenly felt at different stages of the history of Bengali Drama. These plays have conspicuously revealed the
excruciating pain and shame of a nation in fetters. At the same time, they have
also portrayed the grit, iron determination and vehement opposition against the imperial forces. In 1962, Indian nationalism had to go through a
litmus test, as China suddenly invaded India. Fortunately for India, the feeling of nationalism got a tremendous impetus at
this hour of crisis.
This patriotic fervour has left strong impression on the stage or theatre. Several dramas were composed at this crucial period of which,
'Mahaprem' deserves special mention. This play was written in 1959 – three years before the Chinese invasion.
Sri. Manmath Roy was its playwright. Another remarkable play of Manmath Roy was
'Jawan'. The play 'Sainik', written by Dhananjoy Bairagi, was
staged several times at this stage. Au reste, innumerable patriotic plays were
composed during these turbulent days. Some excellent plays worth mentioning are :
'Seemanter Dak' by Sri Digindra Chanra Bandopaddhaya, 'Amar' by Sri. Ramen Lahiri,
'Rakta Padma' by Smt. Preeti Roy, 'Egiye Chalar Chhanda' by Sri
Deb Narayan Gupta, 'Lagna' by Narayan Gangopaddhaya, 'Bed Number
13' and 'Ulma Cabin' by Abhijit, 'Megh' by Jyoti Bandopaddhaya,
'Mrityur Garjan' by Kiran Maitra, 'Seemanta Prahari' by Sunil Dutta,
