In recent times, one-act plays have become very popular and contemporary playwrights mostly get inclined to compose one-act plays. Even in the recent past, Bengali Drama did not have too many one-act plays to boast of, except those of Manmath Roy. Most of the formidable playwrights, in recent times are experimenting with a multitude of one-act plays.

Manmatha Roy can be regarded as the father of Bengali one-act play. Besides, some of the plays of Girish Ghosh Amritlal and Dwijendralal are also considered as exquisite one-act plays. Some verse-plays, and comedies of Rabindranath are also regarded as scintillating specimens of one-act plays.

Some of the spectacular one-act plays worth mentioning are Manmath Roy's 'Bidyutparna', 'Bishkanya', 'Upachaar', 'Totapara' etc.
