Drama After Rabindranath

Bengali Drama revealed a remarkable progress in the days of Rabindra Nath. In the post Rabindra era, Manmatha Roy stands out as a prominent playwright. His forte was the mythological plays. Notable among his plays are 'Debashoor', 'Sabitri', 'Chand Saudagar', 'Sita' etc. His brilliant historical plays are 'Khana' (1932), 'Ashoke' (1933), 'Meer Qasim' (1938), 'Jeebantai Natak' (1952), 'Pathe-Bipathe' (1952) etc.

After Rabindranath, the man who won maximum acclaim as a dramatist of historical plays, was Sri. Sachindra Nath Sengupta. Among his better known plays are 'Gairik Pataka' (1930), 'Siraj-ud-daula' (1938), 'Rashtra Biplab' and 'Dhatri Panna' (1944), 'Swami Stree', 'Tatinir Bibad', 'Matir Maya', 'Ei Swadinata', 'Artanad-o-Jainad' etc.

Sri. Mahendra Gupta had also composed a few historical plays. Those were staged at the 'Star Theatre'. Some of his notable plays are 'Maharaj Nandakumar', 'Tipu Sultan', 'Punjab Keshari Ranjit Singha' etc.

Sri. Nishikanta Basu Roy wrote a few historical plays. His 'Bange Bargi' and 'Debala Debi' have been highly appreciated.

Among other playwrights, Sri. Ramesh Goswami, Sri. Hirendra Narayan Mukhopaddhya and Sri. Jogesh Chowdhuri were known for the plays 'Kedar Roy', 'Palashi' and 'Digbijoyee' respectively.

Bidhayak Bhattacharya was the chief exponent of social plays. Notable among his plays are 'Matir Ghar', 'Megh Mukti', 'Tai to', 'Bish Bachar Age', 'Kshuda' etc.

Inspite of being one of the most outstanding novelists of Bengali literature, Tara Shankar Bandopaddhyay has not shown any remarkable prowess in his plays. Some of his important plays are 'Dui Purush', 'Kalindi', 'Pather Dak' etc.

Saradindu Bandopadhyaya was a very promising playwright. He had nicely blended graceful humour with romanticism in his plays. Among his popular dramas, 'Bandhu' and 'Detective' deserve special mention.

Sri. Pramatha Nath Bishi is held in high esteem in the history of Bengali Drama. He excelled in creating romantic comedies. Some of his outstanding plays are 'Reenang Kritva Ghritang Peebeth', 'Mauchake Dheel', 'Bhutpurba Swami' etc.

There is an inherent message in the plays of Manoj Basu. He is not very meticulous about the artistic subtlety. He has rendered pace to Bengali Drama by mitigating the number of scenes and elaborate acts. Some of his excellent plays are 'Plabon', 'Nutan Prabhat', 'Biparjay', 'Rakhi Bandhan', 'Sesh Lagna' etc.

The plays of Sri. Jogesh Chowdhury bear the stamp of the religious and social idealisms of the contemporary days. 'Parineeta' and 'Patibrata' are two of his outstanding plays.

Sri. Jaladhar Chattopadhhyaya was also appreciated for some of his commendable plays viz. 'Reetimato Natak', 'P.W.D.' etc.

Among the best-known plays of Banaphool are the biographical dramas viz., 'Sri. Madhusudan' and 'Vidyasagar'. He was also a master craftsman of elegant romantic comedies like 'Mantra Mugdha', 'Madhya Bitta', 'Bandhan Mochan', 'Kanchi' etc.
