MOUNTED POLICE
The Calcutta Mounted Police was born in 1912. They were virtually the body-guards of the Viceroy and the Governor. In later years, the
'Mounted Police' became indispensable for combating sudden violent scarmishes and reinstating peace and order in the anarchy-prone areas. At the
inception horses for the 'Mounted Police' were brought from Australia. These horses
were cared and looked after meticulously but of when they grew old, they
were shot dead mercilessly. Then, they were sent to the zoo for being fed by the carnivores.
MACADAMISED ROADS
The Calcutta Corporation decided to make all the unmetalled roads of the city macadamized on 11th September, 1794.
MAYOR OF CORPORATION
The post of the Mayor of Calcutta was created in 1923 by an act of the Corporation. Deshabandhu Chittaranjan Das won the election in 1924 and became the first mayor of Calcutta.
MAN PULLED FAN
Raja Sukhomoy Roy of Pathuria Ghata introduced
the manual fan or man-pulled fan in Calcutta during Durga Puja celebration in his
residence between 1784 to 1790 approximately.
MINI BUS
In order to facilitate and
ameliorate the transport system in Calcutta, Mini Bus started running on the streets of
the city from 10th May,1972.
MEDICAL SOCIETY
The European physicians in Calcutta met on 1st March.1823, to found the
'Calcutta Medical & Physical Society'. The venue of the meeting was
The Asiatic Society.
MATERNITY HOSPITAL
The first Maternity ward in Calcutta was inaugurated on 19th April,1882, in the Medical College Hospital. The first patient was admitted on 17th July.
MAHOGANY
In 1795, two mahogany saplings were brought from West Indies and
planted at Shibpur Botanical Gardens. They were the first mahogany trees
grown in Indian soil.
MOTOR RALLY
The first motor rally in Calcutta was held on 29th August,1904.
MEDICAL CONFERENCE
The first Medical conference in Calcutta was held on 29th December,1894.
MEDICAL COLLEGE
The establishment of Medical College in Calcutta started on 28th January,1835.
Officially, it began on 20th February. However, it started functioning from 1st June onwards with 50 students.
MEDICAL COLLEGE HOSPITAL
In spite of the establishment of Medical College in 1835, the hospital
started operating thirteen years later. On 1st December,1852, this hospital
was inaugurated with 500 beds.
MONEY ORDER
After the establishment of the first modern post office
in Calcutta, the money order system was introduced here
along with the rest of India in 1880.
MARBLE PALACE
Raja Rajendra Mullick built the first marble
palace in Calcutta. At the age of 16, he started
constructing this palace at Chor Bagan. It was finished in 1840.
MALARIA VIRUS
Ronald Ross discovered the virus
while working in Presidency General Hospital on 20th
August,1897. For this remarkable achievement, he was awarded the Nobel prize in 1902.
