LIFE SAVING SOCIETY
The Indian life saving society was formed in 1922 to train people in swimming and to teach them the emergency
rescue measures to save a drowning man. It was formed in Calcutta
and was named the 'Anderson Club'.
LIONS' CLUB
The first 'Lions' Club' in Calcutta, was established in 1957.
LIFT
The first elevator in Calcutta started operating in the Governor House in 1863. The first lift manufactured
by 'Otis' was put to use in Newyork in 1853. A decade
later, Calcutta got introduced to it.
LOTTERY
The lottery system was introduced in Calcutta in 1784. The fund thus pooled in was used to construct Hare
Street, Amherst Street, College Street, Strand Road etc. The
government conducted this game in the year 1809.
LADY DOCTOR
In 1874, Ms. Klara Swine, an American lady, started
practising as the first lady doctor in Calcutta. The first Bengali lady doctor in
the city was Ms. Kadambini Ganguly who started her medical
career in 1888.
LADY POLICE
Women were incorporated in the police cadre from 1949 onwards.
