CABBAGE CULTIVATION
Cabbage was not an original Indian vegetable. The British
introduced it and tentatively started cabbage-cultivation in Calcutta in 1794. Seeing a commendable production, they carried on cabbage cultivation in a wide scale which later picked up in other parts of India as well.
COLLECTORY
In the year 1700, the first
collector's office was established in Calcutta at Lal
Bazar. The first collector was John Ralph Sheldon. The East India Company was the sole authority of the city at that time. So, the ownership of lands was legitimized by a “Putta’ (lease) and sanction from the Company. The most notable among the collectors in Calcutta was Hallwell who adorned the chair from
1752 to 1756.
CORPORATION CREMATORIUM
The oldest crematorium in Calcutta was at Kashi Mitra’s
Ghat. Sri Kashiram Mitra, a resident of Bagh Bazar, built this crematorium in 1774. Kashiram was a witness to the defendant in the famous Nanda Kumar litigation. Later, this crematorium came under the authority of
the Calcutta Corporation.
CORPORATION STREET LIGHTS
The Calcutta Corporation arranged for illuminating the streets of Calcutta with street lights in 1840. Lord Auckland, at this time, directed the Corporation to collect taxes for arranging oil-lamps to illumine the dark roads and alleyways of Calcutta. It is known from the ‘Samvad Bhaskara’ of 9th August, 1856, that the Govt. had bidden the affluent citizens of Calcutta to arrange for
illuminating the front of their houses at night. The Corporation arranged for burning gas lights by road sides in 1857. It started providing electric lights from 1900 onwards.
CORPORATION ELECTION
The first Corporation Election took place in 1847. Four members were empanelled after being elected by the taxpayers.
Corporation Water supply : The Calcutta Corporation started supplying filtered water to the denizens from 4th July, 1874.
COOKING CAR
While going from Howrah to Moghul Sarai,
a cooking car was appended to the train of the Governor
General on 2nd December, 1881. This was the first cooking car in a train
running from Calcutta.
CYCLE
The ancestor of the modern-day cycle was ‘Vellacipid’ which ran on 2/3 wooden wheels. The rider used to kick the
ground for gaining
momemtum. The vehicle came to Calcutta in 1626-27. It was then called safety
bi-cycle. This bicycle ran on the streets of Calcutta for the first time in 1867. Hemendra Mohan Bose was probably the first Bengali owner of a cycle. He opened the first cycle shop at Harrison
Road. The first cycle factory came into being in the year 1938.
CARRIAGE OF GOODS ON AIRCRAFT
The carriage of goods on aircraft started on 21st May,1927, in a flight from Calcutta to
Bagdogra.
CINCHONA CULTIVATION
In 1853, Cinchona cultivation started
in the Shibpur Botanical Garden for the first time.
