BOAT RACE
The first boat race in Calcutta was held on 25th July, 1813. The contest took place on the
river Hooghly. Seven huge boats with masts participated in it.
BROKER
The first broker in Calcutta was Deepchand
Bena. He was a famous tout and used to get a commission of one paise on a rupee, on any purchased commodity. After his death, Janardan Seth took over as the broker.
BANISHMENT OF OXEN
In its post natal days, the roads in Calcutta were thronged
with oxen who roamed carefree and injured several men by charging at them. So the company issued
an order to banish the oxen from the city on 17th August,1815.
BENGALI NEWSPAPER
The first Bengali daily was 'Samvad Prabhakar'
edited by Ishwar Chandra Gupta. It began to come out as a daily newspaper from 14th June,1839.
BUS
Bus service began in Calcutta on 22nd November ,1830. It plied from Esplanade to Barrackpore being pulled by three horses.
BENGAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
On 19th April,1834, Ramgopal Ghosh, Rajendra Dutt, Kalidas
Dutt, Haris Chandra Basu etc. founded an association of
traders named Bengal Chamber of Commerce.
BEIGHTON CUP
Beighton Cup is as precious in hockey as the I.F.A
Shield is in football. This blue-ribbon contest of Indian hockey was started in 1895.
