The
soil of Calcutta has been formed by the alluvial deposits of the Gangeti c
delta and is elevated not more than 5 to 6 meters.
As Calcutta is situated almost in the torrid zone within a degree of the
Tropic of Cancer,
the climate of Calcutta is less uniform than the places
nearer to the Equator. Furthermore, the contrast of
the seasons is not so much discernible here as is evident
in the northern region of the country. In fact, three
major seasons are conspicuous here. They are as
follows :
1) The hot season lasting from the middle
of March to the setting in of the rains in June.
2) The rainy season which lasts approximately
from the middle of June to the end of September.
Sometimes, it extends to the middle or late October,
till the advent of winter.
3) The winter or cold season from November to
early March.
